Drop the Wrong Story and Run!

Let’s talk about our personal story.

I was given the wrong story!

Do any of you have strange dreams that boggle your mind for days until you finally figure them out? The very first novel I wrote was based on a dream like that.

I had a huge aha moment recently after waking up from one of those bizarre dreams, yelling, “You’re not mine!” When I opened my eyes, flashes of handwriting were all around me and it was a long while before my vision cleared.

It took me a couple of days to realize what the dream meant.

Here’s what it was: I was given a story that wasn’t mine.

Growing up I was constantly given the wrong story—you’re not enough of this. You’re too much of that. You’re wrong. You’re not enough.

And I believed it. But WHY??

I mean, think about it. If you are shopping in Wal-Mart and a complete stranger hands you a box, do you take it from him and say thank you? No way! You immediately imagine there might be a severed hand in there and you drop the thing like a hot potato. Then you get the heck out of Wal-Mart and away from the creeper as fast as you can.

So why do we so easily accept the wrong stories about ourselves?

I realized after that dream that I have been going about this the wrong way for years. I’ve been trying to give the story back. I’ve been trying to argue with the creepy man that no, it’s not my box. I’ve been wrestling with him, trying to make him take it back. How crazy is that? If the guy wants me to take that box, he’s going to do all in his power to make me keep it and he won’t stop.

It’s Time to Drop the Wrong Story!

Instead, I need to drop the box like a hot potato and run!

Going forward, I’m going to concentrate all my time on finding my correct story. I’m going to have a dance party about the truth of who I am and what I want. When something crops up from the past, I will say, “That’s not my story!”

I have some major changes coming because part of my true story is helping others to drop the wrong story and pick up the correct one.

Part of that will be creating affirmation journals, a handbook and journey journal for adoptees, and books that will help people find their story.

I haven’t stopped writing fiction. There are quite a few books coming this year.

The Day I Died ebook is coming next week. The paperback will be available within days after that. Clicking on the cover below will take you to the Amazon page where you can preorder.

Book 2 of the Benevolence Society—Michael’s Warrior—is coming this fall. Gabriel’s twin Michael will have to deal with a woman with some amazing powers that blows him away. And he’ll love every minute of it!

I am in the process of finishing 5 books of an illustrated kids fairy princess series with 5 ogre prince stories to follow. Plus, an illustrated fairy tale called Marcus and the Genie Coin will be coming this soon.

I also continue to lead the US Black Heritage Project at the family tree website WikiTree where we reconstruct families torn apart by slavery. The goal is to connect descendants with their enslaved ancestors. Because I believe everyone deserves to know their family story.

As you can see, I have a lot going on and I’m excited about it. I’m especially excited about sharing my journey to find my true story and helping others to do the same.

You aren’t the story people make you take.

You are the story you create.
